Sefton Pensioner’s Advocacy Centre (SPAC) was set up in 1995 by a group of local people who felt that older people needed help in getting their views heard.
Originally staffed entirely by volunteers, we registered as a Charity in 1996. As we expanded, a more formal structure was introduced and in 1997 we employed our first salaried worker. We now have 10 salaried full and part time staff, 3 of whom along with up to 20 volunteers are involved in the general advocacy scheme. We have specialists dealing with the following areas: Housing, Nursing Fees/Care Homes, Mental Health (Functional), Mental Health (Dementia).
As Advocates we provide older people with a “voice”, helping them make their needs known and become involved in decisions affecting their lives and welfare.
Because of isolation from family or friends, poor health, poverty or a lack of confidence some people find it difficult to deal with statutory agencies and may feel vulnerable trying to find their way through complex systems to get access to a service or benefit. This is where the advocacy service comes in.
We receive our core funding through the South Sefton Primary Care Trust and have been fortunate to receive funding for other projects from Comic Relief, the Community Fund ( National Lottery), Age Concern ( Opps for Volunteers), The Hemby Trust and the Housing Associations Charitable Trust (HACT).
